Lounging is something we should definitely take more time out for, so I’ve developed a list of lounge tips that I’d like to share that will help you make the most of your own lounge time.
lounge tip #1:
You must have the intent to lounge when lounging.
Trying to sneak it into an afternoon can sometimes be ineffective if constantly interrupted with outside distractions. In order to get the most out of your down time, plan for it just like you would plan for any other activity. If possible try and fit a nice lounge session into your schedule at least once or twice a week.
lounge tip #2:
Eliminate any possible disruptions when you are trying to seriously take out time to lounge.
Avoid having to get up to answer the phone, feed the dog or check your Blackberry. Turn off all phones and make sure the dog is fed, walked, quiet and comfy. You might even put a note on your front door to ask visitors not to knock.
lounge tip #3:
Pick your poison.
Avoid having to get up to answer the phone, feed the dog or check your Blackberry. Turn off all phones and make sure the dog is fed, walked, quiet and comfy. You might even put a note on your front door to ask visitors not to knock.
lounge tip #4:
Make sure you have all of the proper lounge accessories at your disposal.
The worst thing you can do is get in that perfect position and have to move because you need something. So keep a throw nearby in case you get cold. Keep a glass or bottle of water close by in case you get thirsty. Maybe you prefer a glass of wine. If so, keep the bottle close by so you can top it off if needed. Have all of the remote controls at your disposal and lip balm is key when lounging. There’s nothing worse than dry lips when you’re lounging around.
lounge tip #5:
Pick the perfect spot.
We always think that lounging has to be on the couch or in the bed. But what about relaxing in the park or sitting by the pool? One might even consider dog walking a lounge activity. The point is, you have to choose a place that suits you. If you’re not a reader, don’t read. If you’re not a couch potato, leave the sofa for company. Wherever and however you choose to lounge, make sure it’s a place that you’ll most enjoy.
lounge tip #6:
Wear something comfortable.
It’s safe to say that dressing for the occasion is important. Just like you wouldn’t wear a mini skirt to a floor-seated Japanese restaurant, you wouldn’t wear tight jeans to curl up on your sofa. Sleeves or no sleeves, pants or shorts, gown or robe. Whatever you choose, make sure you’re comfortably covered and able to relax freely.
lounge tip #7
Get fresh.
For some reason, it’s really hard for me to find my most comfortable head space when I’m not super fresh, clean and smelling good. This is not always possible when doing some impromptu lounging, but if you’re planning for a relaxing Sunday afternoon on the couch with a great novel and a throw, being newly showered helps you to better settle into your lounging bliss.
lounge tip #8
Seize the moment.
Lounging when you have time to plan it is amazing. But if you find an opportunity to take in a couple of peaceful moments, do. Often we’re rushing to get somewhere and do something that can wait. If you’re taking a walk and enjoying the weather and your surroundings, park yourself in a quiet sitting spot for a minute and enjoy it. If you’re stressing through your lunch hour, thinking about all of the work you left on your desk back at the office, take a breath and grab your favorite rag mag or weekly to calm your mind. The point is, when you can get a moment, seize it! You’ll be better for it.
lounge tip #9
Clear your mind of nagging thoughts.
If procrastinate the way I do, you’ll never have a peaceful mind until you just handle it. Even if you have something unpleasant to take care of, often, if we just take the initiative and get it done (or start to get it done) we feel so much better.
“Procrastination is a way for us to be satisfied with second-rate results; we can always tell ourselves we’d have done a better job if only we’d had more time…If you’re good at rationalizing, you can keep yourself feeling rather satisfied this way, but it’s a cheap happy. You’re wittling your expectations of yourself down lower and lower.” Richard O’Connor, PhD in Happy at Last: The Thinking Person’s Guide to Finding Joy
