Lounging in the City: Lunching on Abbot Kinney

This weekend was pretty relaxing.  I did a little more lounging around L.A. and wound up in Venice on Abbot Kinney.  The highlight of the day was us going to Gjelina for lunch.  Great food and atmosphere.  Despite the crowd on such a beautiful day, we got rock star parking and then didn’t have to wait longer than 30 seconds to be seated when there was a line out the door and no reservations are allowed.  I guess this is what we were supposed to be doing.  We took shots of our awesome meal which I’m sharing with you above.

Me hanging on Abbot Kinney

I managed to keep my eb loungewear white basic wrap all clean while stuffing my face!  The day couldn’t have been more perfect.  A nice daily escape from my Hollywood Hills neighborhood.  I promise to go back soon.

this week in my dvr…

Summer is winding down, and we’re almost ready for Fall TV.  I have to tell you, I find summer television to be just as good these days.  I’m growing a little tired of the old standbys we’ve come to become so accustomed to in the Fall.  Before I share with you my DVR list, let me tell you I am already ashamed of some of my selections (in particular a specific Liftetime TV reality show), but I’m addicted to television.  And when my crazy days wind down or the weekend comes and it’s time to relax and lounge around on the couch with my Westie, here’s what I’ll be tuning into.

Daily Recordings

The Young & the Restless (CBS)
This is a guilty staple that remains a constant in my DVR.  I’ve been watching this one since childhood.  I wouldn’t recommend it, but since I’m sharing my DVR lineup with you, I had to include it.

This is it now that Wendy Williams is on hiatus and Oprah is gone!

Monday August 15th

Basketball Wives (VH1)
I was so late to this show.  But when I finally discovered it, I caught up with it in a couple of days by logging online to VH1′s website and watching all of the episodes.  This show is beyond ridiculous, and just another Real Housewives type of franchise, but on the urban end of things.  Very entertaining.  Tonight’s episode is the season reunion show, so it should be pretty interesting.

Tia & Tamera (STYLE)
I think these girls are super cute and fun.  I watched the premiere last week and was pretty entertained.  It’s really just another reality show but I think they deserve one.  At least one season’s worth.  One is pregnant and the other is getting married.  Watching twins struggle through that is enough.

The Millionaire Matchmaker (BRAVO)
Patty Stanger cracks me up and tonight is the season premiere.  I have to admit that last season was a little disappointing, but I continue to tune-in.  I would love for her to actually do some follow-up so the viewers actually believe that she can do what she says.  She boasts about the number of marriages and long-term relationships she’s responsible for, and I believe her.  I just want to see the happily-ever-after beyond some one sentence blurb at the end of the show.

Tuesday August 16th

Flipping Out (BRAVO)
Jeff Lewis is still a mess, but I think it’s a little more believable this season.  He’s fired two people from his staff already and I liked them!  It’s also fun for a local L.A. viewer to watch because you actually know where he is driving and what houses he’s working on.  I try and pull any sort of inspiration out of this man as I can, since he, too, home offices.

Born to Dance: Laurieann Gibson (BET)
Ok…this show is a great one!  I cannot stress it enough.  For those of you in the dark on this woman, she was a Fly Girl on In Living Color, she choreographs for Gaga, she’s Emmy nominated, was on Diddy’s Making of the Band, etc., etc.  I always liked her on Making of the Band and now she’s doing her own dance show competition.   As a fan of most dance reality shows, this one is cool because she is looking for the girl with the most heart and passion to dance for her Boom Cat troupe.  I love it!  Some of the girls are strippers, exotic dancers, etc.  Just girls trying to make it.  I love these types of stories.  It’s an hour long and well worth it.  The contestants are from all backgrounds, nationalities and races.  All shapes and sizes!  Highly recommended!

Wednesday August 17th

Dance Moms (LifeTV)
This is the one that I have to say is embarrassing for me to admit I watch, but my best friend convinced me to and so I am.  All I can say is hot mess!  Everyone on this damn show is crazy! EVERYONE.  I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to keep this up, because I can’t imagine the storyline can stem much farther than bored mothers trying to live through their daughters and a crazy dance teacher who is getting paid tons of money to run kids around the country to these dance competitions.  But perhaps it will stay interesting.  For those of you with On Demand, you can catch up by downloading the previous shows.  That’s if this sounds remotely interesting to you.

Royal Pains (USA)
USA Network has some great shows and this is no acception.  Fun, bright, aesthetically pleasing to watch.  Good twist on the overdone doctor dramas they have going these days.  Comedy, love, suspense.  Just a very light show to watch in the summers.  Doctor concierge services in the Hamptons.  It’s a fun watch.

Necessary Roughness (USA)
I was originally just going to watch this because I think Mechad Brooks is so fine, but it’s actually a good show.  Something different than what’s out there.  Athletes in therapy, athletes’ wives in therapy, inside look into professional athlete world.  It could totally be a lie, but I like it.  Dr. Santini, the main character, is a special type of therapist who finds out her husband cheated on her, so after she kicks his ass to the curb she stumbles into a thriving practice because she fell into bed with the right trainer.  Gotta love that!

Thursday August 18th

Project Runway (Lifetime)
What can I say?  This is a given.  Get into it if you’re not already!

Suits (USA)
Probably my favorite new show.  The main premise is a super cute, successful lawyer in NYC finds a protege that is pretending to have gone to Harvard (because the entire law firm went to Harvard).  The protege has a photographic memory and used to take the LSTATs for students trying to get into law school.  Somehow he ended up on a path of destruction, selling marijuana before he stumbled into a six figure law career.  Of course this is completely unrealistic, but super entertaining. And it doesn’t hurt that the managing partner in this fictitious law firm is a beautiful black woman.

Drop Dead Diva (LIfetime)
Lifetime’s special programming isn’t the best, but this show is okay.  There isn’t much to watch on Sunday nights in the summer.  It’s very much a light-hearted, girly show.  Some romance, some mystery.  A cute, aspiring model dies and comes back as a homely, smart, overweight attorney .  Of course the new attorney gets a makeover and is now stylish and fun.  Nothing much, just another show to watch if you’re looking for a Sunday evening program.

this week in my dvr…

The DVR is looking pretty exciting this week.  I’m super busy working and trying to ship out orders, but I still have the television going in the background. Plus, my downtown to lounge is better when I have good television to catch up on!  So much is going on, while so much is about to go on hiatus.  Here is what my DVR looks like this week.

Monday March 14th

Beverly HIlls Fabulous (VH1)
Now I have no idea what sort of show this will turn out to be, but I have to support it because it is a new reality show that takes place at my hair salon! Sean is my hair stylist, FYI.  He definitely gives extra off camera so I can only imagine what kind of entertainment he’ll provide on camera.

The Bachelor (ABC)
It’s the finale! I can’t believe I’m still watching this show, but it’s true. Will Brad choose Emily or Chantal?  I say he’ll choose Emily, but he really needs to choose Chantal.  Safer choice!

Tuesday March 15th

Glee (FOX)
Last week’s episode was awesome!  This week, they go to regionals, and they’re going to be singing original music.  I think they need to keep that original music and stick to the hits, but I’ll be watching.

The Game (BET)
This Kelsey Grammer show is awesome! Love it! A little over the top at times but I stay entertained throughout.  So glad they resurrected this one and brought it back to BET.

Wednesday March 16th

Top Chef All Stars (BRAVO)
I was too upset last week when Carla got sent home.  Tiffany used to be a favorite of mine but she is not bringing it this go round, at all!  That guy Mike can go too, if you ask me.  But nobody asked me!  This is really one of the best reality shows on television.

America’s Next Top Model (CW)
Not a damn thing changes with this show from season to season.  Tyra continues to mentor these aspiring girls, there is always a makeover catastrophe and always a hot mess of a girl in the house.  Yet I’m still watching!  Tyra is really amazing at picking great model potentials out of the masses!  And she is looking really good this season.  Go Tyra!

American Idol (FOX)
I’m not overly excited about the talent pool this season.  Honestly, since that season with Adam Lambert, it hasn’t been that great.  JLo is my main reason for watching. Just to see JLo’s hair, makeup and outfits are enough reasons for me to stay tuned.  Her feedback isn’t that special.  She clearly has a problem hurting the contestants feelings, but hopefully she’s give stronger feedback as the weeks go by.  Steven Tyler is oddly sexy and just, overall, interesting to watch. Randy Jackson seems to be the only judge that really knows what is going on.

Thursday March 17

American Idol (FOX)
Unless there is some good talent performing, I will just race through this one to hear the results.

Private Practice (ABC)
This show is starting to bug me, but it holds my attention.  I felt that way about Grey’s Anatomy last year so hopefully things will pick up.  I just think the subject matter is so extreme that it’s on the edge of being unrealistic.  But I’m not here to bash…especially if I’m still watching.

Saturday March 19th

Time After Time (Hallmark Network)
I’ve already mentioned I love those cheesy romance, made-for-TV movies.  Here is another one.  As a matter of fact, The Hallmark Channel will be running them all day long that day.

A Love Letter for Valentine’s Day

It’s Valentine’s Day! And for those of you who have a sweetie, and are still looking for something really special, there is still time to give the most thoughtful, meaningful gift you could ever imagine, a love letter.  I mean, how awesome would it feel to be on the receiving end of that gesture?  I am not a love letter writing expert, but here are a few tips that I think would help make a great modern day love letter.

Tip no. 1- Don’t deliver your love letter via email, hand write it. How impersonal is an email? So your love is supposed to print it out and hang it in their office? Do it old school, with a trusty pen and some paper. Part of the fun is seeing actual handwriting.

Tip no. 2- Write from the heart and let it flow. The best love letters come from a place many have trouble expressing verbally.  So say what you feel in a voice that sounds like you.  Don’t try to sound like William Shakespeare. Use your own voice. The result will be better received.

Tip no. 3- Make it unique to you and your relationship. Don’t be generic. Reference your relationship in your letter.  This can not be a letter just  anyone could have written.

Tip no. 4- Don’t take yourself too seriously. The idea of writing a love letter can be overwhelming.  It doesn’t need to be over the top.  You don’t have to proclaim your undying love or propose.  Just let your honey know how much you’re feeling them.  Don’t worry about being too perfect.

New Life Resolutions

It’s the last day of January, a month where everyone is making resolutions for the year.  Most people promise to lose weight, make more money, start that business, clean up their lives in some way, etc. This year I didn’t have the energy to put any of those thoughts to paper. I had so many things on my mind and current issues to deal with that the idea of making a resolution took too much energy.  Plus, I had nothing that I felt so compelled to commit to…at least for the first part of the year.

What I finally decided to do is to commit to some life resolutions. They seem as basic as breathing, but easy to overlook.

Life Resolution No. 1- Find happiness in the simple things.
So often we look for things to make us happy. A specific car, a specific house, a certain outfit or a pair of shoes. We find therapy in having these things. I love nice things as much as everyone else. But sometimes finding happiness in the simple things is extremely healing. Taking in nature in your surroundings makes me happy. Accepting a compliment from someone makes me happy. Cuddling with my dog is absolutely priceless.  Simple things are sometimes the very best things. Of course seeing that nature while driving up the coast in a Benz with Chanel shades on and Gucci handbag in the passenger seat makes things much nicer, but you get the point.

Life Resolution No. 2- Be healthy in mind, body and spirit
Of course we all want to have the best bodies of our lives, ready for springtime to hit. By making it a lifestyle decision, I take so much of the pressure off. I have no time limit to meet my goal.  I just live it.  So not only do I practice and teach yoga to keep me physically fit, my goal from here going further is to keep my mind focused on the positive and eliminate the negative. So my thoughts go like this…”It’s going to happen,” not “I hope it’s going to happen.”

Life Resolution No. 3- Love
Whether you’re in love, you’re looking for love or you’ve just lost love, don’t give up hope for love in your life. Make it a priority, no matter your current situation.

Life Resolution No. 4- Celebrate Friendship
I’ve found the most amazing blessings and joy in my friendships so I make it a point to stay in touch with friends. Don’t let those relationships fade away. I talk on the phone to my friends every day. From L.A. to Dallas to St. Louis to Chicago to New York and D.C. If you’re lucky enough to have great friendships (and I say this because I know so many people that don’t), nurture them.

Life Resolution No. 5- Laugh
My favorite thing to do! Do you know there are people who never laugh? I absolutely love laughing. The kind that makes me sick! I’m looking to do a lot more of it in the future.

Life Resolution No. 6- Learn
I love it when I meet new people and go new places. It always means I’m learning something new. I know nothing in the grand scheme of things. Sometimes just listening to my dad drop his knowledge is completely eye opening. I want to read more and meet more people and learn as much as I can…within reason. Be open to learning.

The Pajama Tales- 5 More Funny Things I Do In My Pajamas

as the story goes, pajama fashion can take you farther than you think. in my first article, the pajama tales- pt.1, i discussed how i conduct business, fine dine, travel, and date in my pajamas. i have many more tales of how a modern girl on the go can make her pajamas stretch beyond the bedroom. here are another five things i often do while wearing mine.

pajama tale no. 6- i’m a chef and entertainer, all in my pajamas.

are you able to go directly into greeting your guests at the door and hosting your dinner party, without a wardrobe change? because i only wear the flyest loungewear pajamas you can find, i work my look from prep through after dinner drinks.

pajama tale no. 7- i spa in my pajamas.

sometimes i create the spa in my apartment. and sometimes i create the spa experience between my hair salon, nail salon and eyebrow salon. in or out, pampering needs to be done in comfort. if not, what’s the point.

pajama tale no. 8- i attend blockbuster events in my pajamas.

usually these events are hosted on on my couch watching my latest netflix arrival. sometimes i dress up my pajamas and go to arclight hollywood.

pajama tale no. 9- i go dancing in my pajamas.

two years in a row, at two separate new year’s eve parties i wore my kimono wrap, accessorized with a handbag, heels and jewelry. who knew? for my more frequent dance parties, i just cue up my favorite playlist and dance for my westie.

pajama tale no. 10- i go shopping in my pajamas.

that can be qvc, hsn, amazon or at the actual mall, with the right loungewear pajamas, your wardrobe needn’t change. i’ve found if you’re spending money, the one receiving it on the other end could care less what you’re wearing.

as i’ve said before, pajama-wearing possibilities are endless. you have to make them work for your life, without limitation, but all the while making sure your look works for the occasion. there are many more pajama tales to tell. coming soon.
